Chapter 7

Amy ran up to Sonic and grabbed his arm. "Sonic, no! I'm coming with you!"
Sonic met his eyes with hers. He could see the look of concern on her face.
Tails hopped up right beside him. "I wanna come too, Sonic!"
He smiled, touched by their eagerness to help. But from what Blaze said, it would be too dangerous for them. So he declined their offer. "Thanks you two, but I want you to stay here. I don't want you getting hurt."
"Oh, Sonic," Amy blushed. "I had no idea you were so concerned about my safety and well being. Ok. I'll stay behind and I will be right there when you come back, waiting for you."
"Uh… that's great, Amy," Sonic said with a grimace.
Shadow's mind was reeling from witnessing this bizarre turn of events. Earlier he had been pondering his fate, wondering whether or not to live or die. The answer seemed clear cut when this stranger Silver, tried to murder him.  And yet he still had the will within himself to live. Was he meant for something else in the grander design of things? Was his creator, a limited being himself, ensign him a limited purpose? Or was there something else much bigger than he could ever imagine designing a destiny for him. All he knew is that he had no answers. His mind turned to the situation at hand. This future that these foreigners spoke of, what possibly could have happened that inspired so much hatred of him? He knew he had to discover the reason why.
"If you think you're leaving without me, you're insane!" Shadow butted in.
"Shadow?" Sonic said with slight surprise.
"Don't ask me why, Sonic! I have my own reasons for coming."
  "Whatever you say."
Silver saw Amy pouting with her head down. Feeling sympathetic, he walked up to her and placed his hands on her shoulders. He tried to comfort her, "Don't worry Amy. I'll make sure your husband returns safe and sound."
Blaze took the Chaos Emerald in her hand and lifted it up. She focused on it intently, and light started to emanate from it, showering them with its radiant energy.
  "Husband?!" Sonic screamed eyes wide.
All four figures became enmeshed with energy, and were consumed with light. Then all four shrunk into a small speck, and all were vanished. Amy clasped her hands together. Her heart felt like an anchor, for it sunk so deeply within her that it almost dragged her to the ground. "I hope he comes back to me."
Tails stepped up right beside her. "Don't worry, Amy. I know he'll be back."
"I don't know, Tails.  I just got this feeling like I'll never see him again."
"This is Sonic we're talking about, Amy. I'm sure he'll be back before we know it."
  "I don't know, Tails. I just don't know."
"Please don't be sad, Amy. We're certain Sonic will come back. He's never let us down before. Right, Cheese?" Cream inquired her little Choa chum.
  "Choa! Choa!"
Amy appreciated their efforts to succor to her, but she could not shake her notion. She veered off into the distance. "Oh, Sonic. I hope that wherever you are that you're safe," she thought.

Chapter 8

A speck of light appeared amidst the ruin of the distant future. The speck grew more and more intense, filling every facet of the four figures that illuminated the area. As the light faded Silver, Blaze, Shadow, and Sonic emerged. What met Shadow and Sonic's eyes was almost too horrible to behold. Remnants of homes, shattered glass and lives were all that remained of a world that had utterly sunk into loss and despair.
  "What happened here?" Sonic asked.
Blaze stepped forward, using the pieces of devastated buildings as stepping stones. "The humans would often raid our homes and take whomever they could find.  We managed to make use of what was left to create a base of operations for the resistance."
  Shadow raised one eye. "Resistance?"
"Those of us with abilities have banded together and fought against our human oppressors who would have killed us long ago. We have successfully destroyed seven of the facilities they were using to conduct their experiments."
Sonic dashed up beside her. "Let me guess. You're close to victory, but something has gotten in your way. And that is where I come in."
"That is right. All of the facilities have been destroyed. All but one."
She halted and looked down into the valley below them. In the dead center was a dome shaped structure. A battalion of swat bots standing guard around the perimeter created a forbidding atmosphere.
"That is where it all began. Chaos Laboratories. All of the other labs were just smaller versions of this one. But this one has a force field surrounding it. We haven't been able to penetrate it."
"Why not just teleport in using Chaos Control?" Shadow interjected.
"We have tried. Something inhibits us each time. We have lost a few of our own trying. It is like there is some force of Chaos energy inside, but we have no idea where it comes from. We liberated all seven of the Chaos emeralds from the labs that we destroyed."
"Where are the Chaos emeralds? Sonic asked.
"The resistance has hidden each one in different locations known only to us. We believe the humans were using the power of the emeralds to augment our people with their experiments."
"Who leads the resistance?" Shadow quarried.
"Silver and I do. We are the ones responsible for starting the resistance. Come. Rest. You both have taken in a lot. Tomorrow we will end this battle."
The two hedgehogs were given each their own accommodations. As Sonic observed the desolate surroundings and their resistance inhabitants, he noticed the void look in their eyes. It was as if their spirits had been crushed beyond recovery. Most of them did not even bat an eye at him, ignoring him as he passed by. A few of took a glance, but absorbed themselves into their duties immediately afterward. What was especially eerie was the deafening silence. No one spoke, no, not a single word. He walked into quarters and laid himself down on the mat nestled in the corner. Resting his head on crossed arms, he stared at the cracked ceiling. Musing to himself he thought, "There has got to be a way to bring life and hope back to these people." He shut his eyes trying to put his heavy heart out of his mind.

Chapter 9

It was the dawn of a new day and the sun shined brighter than ever before. There was tension in the air for everyone knew that this day everything was going to change, for better or worse. Tomorrow the world would be awakened to either glorious rejoices of freedom or anguishing lamentations of heaved oppression. Today the world was set on a teetering balance between the two extremes. It all depended on who won or lost in the war.
Silver entered Sonic's quarters and bid him good morning. "Blaze wants to see you. She'll show you our plans for attacking Chaos Laboratories."
The two hedgehogs headed out for their briefing. Silver felt uneasy in Sonic's presence. His nervousness crawled inside and out of his body. For years he had heard tales of Sonic the Hedgehog. Some thought he was mere myth and legend. Never in his wildest dreams, did he ever imagine that he would stand face to face with this monumental figure.  It was riveting. He tried to muster the courage to speak to him, but started to stutter.
"S-s-so, in my time you're called the greatest hero that ever lived."
Sonic looked surprised. "Is that so?"
Silver regained his composure and continued, "Most of our history has been lost or forgotten, ever since the raids. So Blaze and I have been trying to piece together how all of this started so we could prevent this nightmare from ever happening. But throughout all time you have remained constant and true in the hearts and minds of the people."
"Well don't ruin the end for me, huh? I'd like to be surprised."
"Even if I wanted to I couldn't. There would be no telling what effect it might have in your future or our past. Let's make a detour and bring Shadow with us."
  "Fine by me."
Soon all three hedgehogs were walking towards what used to be a house. Inside Blaze awaited them. Arms crossed behind her back, she watched the hedgehogs enter with a sober look on her face.
"Good morning. I trust you both had a good night's rest?"
"I'm ready for whatever you got in store for me!" Sonic smiled.
  "Can't complain," Shadow said somberly.
Blaze's face deviated from her usual stark expression. It looked almost pleased. "Excellent. Let us proceed then shall we? Here is the plan. The rest of the resistance and I will distract the swat bots guarding the perimeter. Sliver, your assignment is to get Sonic through the force field, using your telekinetics. With enough focus you should be able to weaken the field long enough to create an opening for Sonic to use his speed to burst through."
"I will do the best I can. I won't fail you."
"I know you won't. Sonic, we need you to find the field's power source and destroy it. I'm sorry, but we have no intel of where or what it is. We'll be sending you in blind."
"Just leave it to me. I'm sure I'll find it."
"I'm sure you will. After the field is deactivated, Silver and Shadow will plant five bombs throughout the infrastructure. Then that miserable place will be gone forever."
Something puzzled Sonic. Wouldn't the building need to be manually operated from the inside? Certainly the entire complex wasn't completely void of any workers who managed equipment or maintained machines.  "What about the workers? Aren't there humans inside? Aren't you going to get them out?"
"The humans are no concern of ours. Whether they survive or not matters not to us. It is a necessary evil for our freedom." Blaze put it bluntly.
Sonic's fists clenched with rage. "What! How could you do that!? It could lead to a full fledged war!"
"This already is a war! It has always been a war, ever since they first raided our homes and took our families away from us! They are the ones who started this war, and in war there will always be casualties!"
"If you take this action, then human blood will split on your people's hands! You won't have freed your people, Blaze! You'll only enslave them to centuries more of catastrophe after catastrophe!"
"Until you see your family taken away from you in front of your very eyes, then you can tell me what is right and what is wrong! And until that happens, then YOU tell me to care about the lives of a few humans!"
"If you do this, many more families will be torn apart, and it will be your fault!"
Blaze opens her mouth to speak, but no words come out.
"Look, you came to me for help. But if you want me to help you to kill, then forget it!" He turns his back to her and starts to walk away.
"Wait! You're…you are right. I…I apologize for letting my personal feelings cloud my judgment."
Sonic turned around. "Blaze, freedom can only exist when there is peace. Take a look around you. Is this the future you want for your people? A future filled with pain and suffering?"
"N-no," she said with her voice quivering. Tears started to run down her cheeks profusely.
Silver walked up to her and wrapped his arms around her. He squeezed her tight, for he knew they were both feeling the same feelings. He just had never seen her succumb to them. Up until now she had always held her own, never letting her emotional armor become cracked or dented. But now it had all fallen to pieces.
She quickly wiped the tears from her eyes. "Alright then. Change of plans. Timers will be rigged onto the explosives. They will be set for just enough time for the resistance to evacuate the building. Neither human nor our people's blood will be the price of our freedom. Today will mark a new era for the whole world. We must not fail!"
Sonic smiled. "Now you're talking. Let's do it to it!"
Here is the third installment of my do over story. I know Blaze the Cat is incapable of using Chaos Control, but in my continuity, all of the resistance can use it. Their individual powers are just a side effect of the experimentation.
